WHO IS SCHOOL BUS INC?

School Bus, Inc. traces its origin back 58 years to 1963. In that year our founder, Charles J. Hey, purchased and operated a ten-bus fleet under contract with the Jasper, Minnesota School District. The business grew to include contracts with the Willmar, Minnesota and Marshall, Minnesota School Districts in 1973 and 1975, respectively. These operations also included a fleet of motor coaches for tour and charter operations. At each of these locations, our company met the regular education, special education, and extracurricular transportation needs of the three school districts daily.

In 1978, the Sioux Falls School District contacted Mr. Hey, who was at that time President of the Minnesota School Bus Operators’ Association, for assistance with their transportation program which had fallen into distress due to the bankruptcy of a prior owner/operator. After Mr. Hey performed consultation services, the Sioux Falls School District requested that Mr. Hey submit a bid to furnish school bus service. He agreed and was awarded a five-year contract to provide transportation to the District commencing in the fall of 1979. Ever since, School Bus, Inc. has served the regular education, special education, and extracurricular transportation needs of the Sioux Falls School District.

Today, our modern, professionally maintained fleet of 106 yellow and activity buses safely and efficiently boards over 7,000 students each day for 362 routes and transports them to and from 21 elementary, five middle schools, and five high schools. Included in this total are 310 special needs (including wheelchairs), ECSE and Headstart students. In addition, we also transport students to all forms of extracurricular activities locally and throughout the states of South Dakota, Minnesota, Iowa, Nebraska, and beyond. Each year, our staff of professionally trained school bus drivers and aides travel nearly 1,000,000 miles to deliver students to school and school-related activities and home again. In recognition of the talents and dedication of our entire organization, School Bus Fleet magazine honored School Bus, Inc. as its “Contractor of the Year” in 1992 and one of its “Great Fleets across America” in 2000.
